Pisces Moon in the garden

In the garden Watery Pisces is very fertile, particularly suitable for growing water plants, like Water Chestnuts and Lotus. It is also a great time for propagating cuttings, grafting, irrigation, pruning to encourage re-growth, but not potatoes that may sprout too soon. This planting however is better left for the period between New Moon and Last Quarter; and no planting/sowing done during the last week of the Lunar Month.

Romantic garden walks, music ensembles, yoga sessions, spiritual gathering, and relaxed picnics could do well too.

Last Quarter Moon Phase in the garden

    • Note that the garden activities associated with the Moon Sign depend also on the cycle the Moon is in. The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

The Last Quarter Moon is the beginning of the fourth and last waning week, before New Moon. We should stop all sowing and planting, and concentrate on soil conditioning, cultivation, slow release fertilizing and composting. This phase is suitable also for harvesting and storing fruit and vegetables; as well as getting rid of unwanted weeds and pests, particularly if the Moon transits any of the Fire Signs, or Non Fertile Earthy Virgo, or the Non Fertile Air Signs of Gemini and Aquarius.

Scorpio Moon in the garden

Scorpio is a Water Sign and a very fertile Sign. Everything should do well when planted in Scorpio, if the Moon is in the right phase.
Scorpio is also suitable for propagating cuttings, grafting and deep irrigation. It promotes sturdy roots reaching down deep for moisture. Corn, squashes and tomatoes seem to like particularly to be transplanted when the Moon is in Scorpio.

  • The following are the Edible Plants, Herbs, Trees and Flowers since ancient times associated with Scorpio, and also with Mars, Scorpio‘s traditional Ruler, the archetypal god of action, assertion and conflicts. This is why plants with thorns and prickles that they use as weapons against predators are attributed to Mars and the Signs he rules, Scorpio and Aries; same for plants with hot, acrid or sharp taste etc.
Another important connection is that of Scorpio with the sexual organs and functions. So medicinal herbs/plants improving sexual vigor and enhancing libido (aphrodisiacs) and those helpful in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions. Because Scorpio is also connected to the last portion of the intestines, the rectum, herbs used to heal hemorrhoids are also linked with this Sign.

Edible Plants: Chilli, Hops, Nettle, Onions, Peppers, Pomegranate, Radish.

Healing Herbs: Aloe, Barberry, Basil, Capers, Coriander, Don Quai, Ergot, Garlic, Gentian, Ginseng, Horseradish, Mustard, Nettle, Pennyroyal, Radishes, Sarsaparilla, Senna, Tarragon, Tobacco, Wormwood .

Tree GlyphTrees: Hawthorns, the Grumpy Oak, so called for its crooked branches, the oldest living trees in Europe. Palms are also attributed to Scorpio, due to their phallic trunk and abundance of seeds.

Flower Glyph pinkOrnamental and Flowering Plants: Anemones, Black-eyed Susan, Blackthorns, Cactus Flowers, Dark Red Flowers, Gardenias, Gentian, Heather, Holly, Rhododendrons, Scarlet Monkey, Yews. And all phallic looking flowers, like Calla Lilies

This Moon Phase in the garden

  • Note that the garden activities associated with the Moon Sign depend also on the cycle the Moon is in. The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

In the garden the Full Moon is a great divide: before the exact phase the increasing light and surging energy are particularly good for Annuals and above the ground crops; after the phase Perennials, Biennials, Trees and Root crops are more suited. Traditionally no sowing or planting are recommended however twelve hours before or after the phase itself. In this instance the best day would be then May 8, from 8.45 am until 5.15 pm, when the Moon enters Sagittarius. I personally like to take advantage of a great fertile Full Moon in Scorpio and sow/transplant during the whole Scorpio transit, no matter how close to the exact phase.

LIBRA, Moon of justice and harmony
Cooperative and artistic

The WAXING MOON TRANSITS LIBRA from Sunday, September 1, 9.07 am,
to Tuesday, September 3, 9.34 am, with the ingress into SCORPIO

Suitable energy for sharing, decorating, being artistic, holding meeting, conflict resolution, diplomatic missions, weddings, engagements, parties, gifts, fantasy reading, falling in love, hairdressing, making oneself beautiful. Purchase of articles of clothing, cosmetics, furnishings, flowers, jewellery, art equipment. Action motivated by the desire to meet others half way, to be fair, to agree and harmonize. Amiable display of feeling, seeking equality, idealistic, cooperative. Beware of indecisiveness, lack of assertion, wishy-washy attitudes, peace at any cost syndrome, vanity, self indulgence.

  • In the garden Libra, unlike the other two Air Signs, Aquarius and Gemini, is traditionally considered fertile and productive. Being a Sign of Venus, goddess of pleasure and beauty, Libra is an ideal Sign to sow and transplant flowering plants and ornamental, and also herbs which help to balance the Elements in the body. Libra encourages bloom, but few seeds.
  • Healing Herbs:Corn Silk, Parsley, Uva ursi
A note: the garden activities associated with the Moon Sign depend also on the cycle the Moon is in. The Moon transiting through a fertile or productive Sign will no be so favorable if the Phase is not a productive one, and vice-versa. For best results the Sign and Phase of the Moon have to be considered together.

The New Moon

The VIRGO NEW MOON PHASE begins on Friday, August 30, 8.37 pm,
and ends on Tuesday, September 3, 1.06 am, with the LIBRA CRESCENT MOON PHASE

The New Moon is the beginning of the Waxing cycle, the sacred marriage of Moon and Sun, Yin and Yang, Night and Day. For three days the Moon becomes invisible. Astrologically we say that the Moon is now conjunct the Sun (on the same degree of Longitude along the Ecliptic). Every month the New Moon occurs in a different Sign. So the Aries New Moon in March/April is always followed by the Taurus New Moon in April/May and so on. New Moons are symbols of new beginning and represent a great time to start something or make important changes in our lives. The energy is right for everything new you would like to try.

  • In the garden this is traditionally a time to begin sowing and planting because the increasing Moon light will help plants to emerge and flourish. Moisture becomes more and more available as the light of the Moon intensifies, up to the Full Moon. Traditionally however no sowing or planting are recommended within twelve hours of the phase itself.

Crescent Moon

The LIBRA CRESCENT MOON PHASE begins on Tuesday, September 3, 1.06 am,
and ends on Friday, September 6, 1.10 pm, with the SAGITTARIUS FIRST QUARTER MOON PHASE

The Crescent Moon occurs half way through the first week of the Waxing cycle, when the Moon is transiting 45 degrees ahead of the Sun and looks like a beautiful crescent in the western sky after sunset. Psychologically this is an enthusiastic time, in which lots of ideas crowd our mind and we may feel that the sky is the limit. It is a slightly naïve Moon time, but also one full of hopes and dreams (the bright crescent shows now the shadowy sphere of the future Full Moon. The energy of the Moon however needs maturing at this stage and grounding. The first difficulties may appear, the first chinks in the armor; but the challenge is not strong enough yet for us to build up on it.

  • In the garden this is an excellent growing time: everything can go in now, but in particular leafy vegetables and all plants that we grow for their above the ground parts, but only when the Moon is transiting through the very fertile Water Signs or the productive Signs Taurus, Libra and Capricorn.

The Waning Moon transits Gemini from very early Saturday, August 24, to Monday, August 26, during the Gemini Last Quarter Moon Phase

Click the image to view Bob Brown Birth Chart and the Reading of his major astrological configurations. Bob Brown was born when the Moon was transiting Gemini, conjunct Uranus in the Second House, and the Sun Capricorn, in the Ninth House, in opposition to Saturn in Cancer, both in square to Neptune in Libra. His Ascendant was Taurus and the Ruling Planet Venus was in Aquarius in the Tenth House in opposition to Pluto in the Fourth House, conjunct the Lower-Heaven (IC).

GEMINI, Moon of mental flexibility and communication
Inquisitive and social

The WAXING MOON TRANSITS GEMINI from Saturday, August 24, 0.33 am,
to Monday, August 26, 7.05 am, with the ingress into CANCER

Suitable energy for traveling, studying, researching, reading, writing, teaching, moving, walking, running, advertising, talking, brain storming, contact with siblings, computer work, accounting, graphic designing, artistic skills. Purchase of books, magazines, school gear, cars, bikes, art equipment. Quick action, rapid response, motivated by present circumstances and the curiosity to know. Adaptable mental energy. Friendly, sisterly, brotherly feelings, independent, needing change and variety. Beware of inconstancy, nervousness, irritability, mental games, gossips, double dealings, cold intellectualism, superficiality.

  • In the garden Gemini is considered too dry and barren for growing anything. Its energy is suitable for cultivating, general maintenance, pruning, pest control, weeding, and harvesting. Today the energy could be right for designing the garden, for parties and get-togethers with friends and siblings.
  • Healing Herbs: Coltsfoot, Hyssop, Lemon Balm, Mullein.

Last Quarter Moon

The GEMINI LAST QUARTER MOON PHASE begins on Saturday, August 24, 0.55 am,
and ends on Tuesday, August 27, 3.05 pm, with CANCER BALSAMIC MOON PHASE

If the First Quarter presented us with external challenges to overcome in order to achieve the goal promised by the Full Moon, at the Last Quarter we feel that whatever bar our progress is within us and not without. We can now take responsibility for our life and circumstances. The battle needs to be fought with oneself and not other people. Both Quarters are crucial times that suggest division and strife, but while at the First Quarter we could find refuge in the illusion that the cause of all the problems was someone or something else, now we can clearly see how we contribute to whatever crisis we may be experiencing. The Moon is now 90 degrees behind the Sun, another right angle. The friction generated by the inner dialogue could be very creative if you don’t let it depress you.

  • In the garden we should stop all sowing and planting, and concentrate on soil conditioning and cultivation. Suitable energy also for harvesting and getting rid of unwanted weeds and pests.

Muhammed Ali in Chicago 1966

Muhammed Ali in Chicago 1966. Click the image to navigate to his Astrology Reading Page. The extraordinary Heavy Weight World Champion Cassius Clay was born when the Moon was transiting Aquarius and the Sun Capricorn, both in the Sixth House, the Sun in square to Mars in Taurus (see his struggle with Parkinson disease which eventually killed him). The Sun was also part of a Earth Grand Trine with Uranus-Saturn in Taurus and Neptune in Virgo. His Ascendant was Leo and so the Sun in Capricorn was his Ruling Planet. His Mercury and Venus were, like the Moon, in Aquarius and all conjunct, all in trine to Jupiter in Gemini. His Mars was in Taurus in the Ninth House. Saturn and Uranus were also in Taurus, conjunct in the Tenth House. His Jupiter was in Gemini in the Eleventh House and both Chiron and Pluto were rising in the Twelfth House in Leo. His Neptune sat on the cusp between Virgo and Libra.

AQUARIUS, Moon of knowledge and dispassion
Friendly and eccentric

The WAXING MOON TRANSITS AQUARIUS from Wednesday, August 14, 1.35 am,
to Friday, August 16, 1.49 pm, with the ingress into PISCES

Suitable energy to make individual choices, to work in groups, to be with friends, to become aware of social issues, to change attitudes, share ideas, do the old thing in a new way, research, understand, study, teach, technology, Astrology, the Net, the unexpected, encounters with strangers or strange, eccentric people, UFO sighting. Purchase of books, encyclopedias, computer programs, computers, technology, electrical appliances. Action motivated by the desire to participate without losing one’s own individuality. Friendly, contained display of feeling, somewhat distant. Beware of coldness, indifference, emotional isolation, cynicism, impracticality, physical inhibitions.

  • In the garden Aquarius is considered too dry and barren for growing anything, but Pine Trees (?). Its energy is suitable for cultivating, general maintenance, pruning, pest control, weeding, harvesting. A ‘work day’ or other group activities in the garden will be ideal.
  • Healing Herbs: Chamomile, Skullcap, Valerian.

Gibbous Moon

The CAPRICORN GIBBOUS MOON PHASE begins on Sunday, August 11, 9.38 pm,
and ends on Thursday, August 15, 10.29 pm, with the AQUARIUS FULL MOON PHASE

The Moon is waxing, 135 degrees ahead of the Sun, only 45 degrees or three and half days to the Full Moon. The Moon shows a strange shape now, like a rugby ball. Our goals are becoming more clear and we can power ahead, not too concerned about possible obstacles on our path. The power of attraction of the Full Moon proves irresistible.

  • In the garden as in life there should be plenty of activities and a sense of urgency, least one should waste the great energy available at the moment. When the Moon transits a very fertile Sign like Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, or a productive Sign like Taurus, Libra and Capricorn in this phase practically every plant and seed can go into the garden successfully. This is the middle of the second waxing week. Ideally, after sowing or planting leafy vegetables in the first week, we should be busy putting in those plants we grow for their fruit or seedpods (tomatoes, beans, etc.).

Full Moon

The AQUARIUS FULL MOON PHASE begins on Thursday, August 15, 10.29 pm,
and ends on Tuesday, August 20, 1.27 am, with the ARIES DISSEMINATING MOON PHASE

At Full Moon the Moon has reached a distance of 180 degrees ahead of the Sun, becoming diametrically opposed to it, with planet Earth in the middle. This is symbolically harvest time, when we reap what we have sown in the waxing period. We might experience success or failure, but either way we are coming to some important realization. The cycle has now reached its half way mark and is at its most intense. Like the New Moon a fortnight earlier this is also a time for new beginnings, not in the naïve, tentative way of the New Moon, but in a more mature and conscious way.

  • In the garden the Full Moon is a great divide: before the exact phase the increasing light and surging energy are particularly good for Annuals and above the ground crops; after the phase Perennials, Biennials, Trees and Root crops are more suited. Traditionally no sowing or planting are recommended however twelve hours before or after the phase itself. Some authors suggest even 24 hours.

The Waxing Moon transits Sagittarius from Friday, August 9, to Sunday, August 11, during the Scorpio First Quarter Moon Phase

Freddie Mercury

Click the image to navigate to Freddie Mercury Astrology Page, with his Birth Chart and the Progressions and Transits at the time of death. Exceptional composer and performer Freddie Mercury was born when the Moon was transiting Sagittarius, in the Fourth House, and the Sun Virgo, in the First House. His Ascendant was also Virgo and the Ruling Planet Mercury was rising in Virgo, in far conjunction to the Sun in the First House and in semi-square to Mars in Libra. Freddie Mercury had a ‘Stellium’ of planets in Libra, in the Second House, namely: Neptune, Mars, Chiron, Jupiter and Venus. His Sagittarius Moon was in close sextile to Venus and Jupiter and also in opposition to Uranus in Gemini and trine Mercury in Virgo. His Virgo Sun was instead in semi-square to Venus and Jupiter. Both Saturn and Pluto were in Leo, in the Twelfth House. Mercury died of pulmonary complications brought about by AIDS in the evening of November 24 1991, at the age of 45. His illness had been diagnosed in late April 1987.

SAGITTARIUS, Moon of the questing spirit and prophecy
Adventurous, independent

The WAXING MOON TRANSITS SAGITTARIUS from Friday, August 9, 6.34 am,
to Sunday, August 11, 2.49 pm, with the ingress into CAPRICORN

Suitable energy for traveling, exploring, radiating optimism, engaging in philosophical discussions, speculations, risk taking, gambling, adventures, trekking, camping out, wild life, search for God or Guru. Purchase of travel tickets, camping gear, cars, bikes, horses, dogs, raffle and lottery tickets. Action motivated by the desire to explore behind the personal sphere. Friendly display of feelings, gregarious and warm, but extremely independent and often unreliable. Beware of self inflation, preaching, boasting, being fanatical, overbearing, self righteous, impatient, uncompromising.

  • In the garden Sagittarius, like all Fire Signs, is traditionally considered too hot, dry and barren for growing anything, with the exception of Fruit Trees. Its energy is suitable for cultivating, general maintenance, pruning, pest control, weeding, and harvesting. A day with your favorite pet could prove rewarding, and so will be a night under the stars.
  • Healing Herbs: Dandelion, Garlic, Horsetail, Onions.

First Quarter

The SCORPIO FIRST QUARTER MOON PHASE begins on Thursday, August 8, 3.30 am,
and ends on Sunday, August 11, 9.38 pm, with the CAPRICORN GIBBOUS MOON PHASE

The Moon is now 90 degrees ahead of the Sun, a right angle, very powerful. We meet some serious obstacle on our way. The goal is still strongly in view (Full Moon) but something or someone seem intent at stopping us or hinder our progress. This is the most critical point in the waxing period. It is important that we meet the challenge now, but it is also essential that we don’t go to war with people around us, blaming them for our difficulties, which are instead just a natural phase of our journey. There is something a bit black and white in this Moon’s position and the attention is perhaps focused too much on outside circumstances.

  • In the garden this is the demarcation time between the first and second weeks of the Moon cycle, an important boundary, because different types of plants can now go in, those we grow for their fruit or seedpods (tomatoes, beans etc.). The Moon needs also to be transiting a fertile or productive Sign.

The Waxing Moon transits Scorpio from Wednesday, August 7, to Friday, August 9, between the Virgo Crescent and the Scorpio First Quarter Moon Phase

Michael Hutchence

Click the image to navigate to Michael Hutchence Astrology Page, Birth and Death Charts. Michael Hutchence was born when the Last Quarter Moon was transiting Scorpio, conjunct Neptune in the Tenth House, and the Sun Aquarius. rising conjunct the Ascendant, in the First House. His Ascendant was Capricorn and Saturn in Capricorn, in the Twelfth House, was his Chart’s Ruling Planet. Mars was also in the Twelfth House in conjunction to Saturn. Michael’s Venus was in Sagittarius in near perfect conjunction to Jupiter, in the Eleventh House. Michael died on November 22 1997 of a suspected suicide by hanging. Neptune was near perfect conjunction to his Mercury in Capricorn and very close to his Capricorn Ascendant and Zero degree Aquarius Sun. That particular Transit seems to have had a negatively morbid effect on Hutchence. Many other factors were also a play though, as it is always in these tragic cases. Quite eerie, for instance, is the perfect conjunction (same degree and minute ! ) of the Transiting Black Moon Lilith and his Lunar Ascending Node in Virgo; also the alignment of transiting Chiron to his Neptune; the near perfect conjunction of the Progressed Venus to his Saturn in Capricorn, in the Twelfth House of self-undoing. The two yearly Mars Return has taken place few days before his death also in the Twelfth House. The transiting Moon was entering Libra, the Sign occupied by Pluto at Birth, only five degrees from Pluto, in the Eighth House. Transiting Saturn had already made two passes over his Lower-Heaven (cusp of the Fourth House) since May of that year too. Finally the progressed Sun in Pisces was in exact trine to the Natal and Progressed Neptune in Scorpio.

SCORPIO, Moon of depth and resourcefulness
Emotionally supportive and resilient

The WAXING MOON TRANSITS SCORPIO from Wednesday, August 7, 11.31 am,
to Friday, August 9, 6.34 am, with the ingress into SAGITTARIUS

Suitable energy for cleansing, getting rid of the old, spring cleaning, rubbish removal, recycling, nursing, practical and emotional support, midwifery, intimacy, partnership in business, profound talks, sharing secrets, healing old wounds, cultivating psychic powers, studying occult subjects. Purchase of insurance policies, underwear, hygiene articles, medicines, medical equipment, payment of bills, fees and taxes, collecting debts. Helping the dying, honouring the dead. Action motivated by the desire to experience, to know or to control. Reserved and deep feelings, strong attachments, intense likes and dislikes. Beware of wilfulness, emotional control, resentments, obsessive thoughts, unyielding attitudes.

  • In the garden Scorpio is a very fertile Sign. It is also suitable for propagating cuttings, grafting and irrigation. It promotes sturdy roots. Corn, squashes and tomatoes seem to like particularly to be transplanted when the Moon is in Scorpio.
  • Healing Herbs: Aloe, Don Quai, Ginseng.

XIV Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso

Click the image to navigate to the Dalai Lama Birth Chart Page. The XIV Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso was born when the Moon was transiting Virgo and the Sun Cancer. Born just before sunrise his Ascendant is Cancer so the Virgo Moon in conjunction to Neptune is the Ruling Planet of his Horoscope. Both Moon and Sun are richly aspected, with alignments to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. His Mercury is in Gemini (writing and communication skills), his Venus in Leo (warmth, passion) and Mars in Libra (diplomacy). Jupiter and Saturn are in the Water Signs of Scorpio and Pisces respectively. The New Moon before his birth was a Cancer Solar Eclipse aligned to the Descending Lunar Node and his Birth Ascendant. The Full Moon following his birth was a Total Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn, with the Moon aligned perfectly to the North or Ascending Lunar Node and the Sun to the South Descending Lunar Node.

VIRGO, Moon of humility and craftsmanship
Purifying and healing

The WANING MOON TRANSITS VIRGO from Friday, August 2, 11.20 pm,
to Sunday, August 4, 11.29 pm, with the ingress into LIBRA

Suitable energy for general and menial work, in particular jobs that require attention to details and great patience, crafts, knitting, sewing, cooking, mending, cleaning, nursing, volunteering, accounting, studying, researching, testing, purifying, collecting, classifying, putting order into chaos. Purchase of craft materials and tools, collectibles, pets. Action motivated by practical needs, daily routine, taking care of the body learning to discriminate and to perfect. Timid expression of feeling, sometimes prickly, always helpful at the practical level. Beware of hyper-criticism, a calculating attitude, lack of grace, inhibitions, phobias, hypochondria, feelings of unworthiness.

  • In the garden Despite the earthy nature and the symbolic ear of corn in the Maiden’s left hand* Virgo is considered barren. Plants will supposedly grow spindly, tough and woody if planted on the Virgo Moon. The Sign is great however for tidying up the garden, work bee days, and fertilizing.
  • Healing Herbs: Blackberry, Fennel, Flax.

The LEO NEW MOON PHASE begins on Thursday, August 1, 1.11 pm,
and ends on Sunday, August 4, 6.06 pm, with the VIRGO CRESCENT MOON PHASE

The VIRGO CRESCENT MOON PHASE begins on Sunday, August 4, 6.06 pm,
and ends on Thursday, August 8, 3.30 am, with the SCORPIO FIRST QUARTER MOON PHASE

The first difficulties may appear, the first chinks in the armour; but the challenge is not strong enough yet for us to build up on it.

  • In the garden this is an excellent growing time: everything can go in now, but in particular leafy vegetables and all plants that we grow for their above the ground parts, but only when the Moon is transiting through the very fertile Water Signs or the productive Signs Taurus, Libra and Capricorn.

The title Balsamic Moon is derived from the word ‘balsam’, unguent which helps to relieve pain and cure ills. During this time we could distill the essence of our past experience, from the last New Moon up to this point, reflect upon what we have experienced and learnt, getting psychologically ready for the cycle which is about to open. This is a spiritual phase, more suitable for meditation and relaxation than action.

First Quarter

The LIBRA FIRST QUARTER MOON PHASE starts on Tuesday, July 9, 8.54 pm,
and ends on Saturday, July 13, 10.57 am, with the SAGITTARIUS GIBBOUS MOON PHASE

The New Moon1 New Moon Crescent fast

The CANCER NEW MOON PHASE, also a TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE on 10°37′ CANCER started on Wednesday, July 3, at 5.16 am,
and will end on Saturday, July 6, 12.24 pm, with the LEO CRESCENT MOON PHASE.

And Venus was also aligned, by conjunction, to Pluto and Neptune, in fact just about midpoint between them. During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. The last Radio Signal from their plane was detected on July 2 1937, at 8.45 am. The fate of the two aviators has never been discovered. Theories/speculations abound.

Last Quarter to Balsamic GifLast Quarter

The ARIES LAST QUARTER MOON PHASE starts on Tuesday, June 25, 7.46 pm,
and ends on Saturday, June 29, 5.11 pm, with the TAURUS BALSAMIC MOON PHASE
